Recreational Amenities on the Erie Canal

The resources and information on this page are designed to help canal municipalities, counties, and non-profits create a consistent and predictable experience for all types of recreational users, including boaters, paddlers, cyclists, and pedestrians, including those with varying abilities.

Amenities Study, 2025

The Erie Canal, the NYS Canalway Water Trail, and Erie Canalway Trail are valued recreational assets that link history, community, culture, and recreation across New York State. The trails are widely used for walking, running, bicycling, paddling, and boating. This study offers a comprehensive conditions evaluation and long-term plan for recreational amenities, like rest rooms, water, charging stations, and storage facilities, on the Erie Canal.

Findings and recommendations are intended to:

  • Improve the recreational user experience
  • Enhance the Canalway Corridor's distinct sense of place
  • Improve amenities for people of all abilities
  • Strengthen long-term stewardship of the system by users.
